Primary source #1: young children in combat
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvadoran_Civil_War
In this photograph we young men geared up for battle, it's rare that the main objective in this photograph seems to be the youngest of them. This boy appears to be about twelve years old. During the Salvadoran Civil War children were taken away from their families and forced to participate in this war. Most of the time when these innocent children were separated from their parents they were stolen and had no choice whether to join or not. The daily life for children should be about having fun and having zero worries. Instead they had to train to protect their families.

primary source #2: Quote from an innocent girl
That soldier stole everything from me. He took away my parents, he took away my siblings, he took away my identity. I couldn't live like a girl because he never gave me the love of a father and he was always abusing me.

I thought this quote was important because I believe that the soldiers that were forced to steal children for the better of their country and that made their daily life very hard. Its seems to me that by doing these actions soldiers became very cruel to civilians and the importance of family was not a major factor to them. Most of the soldiers from the Salvadoran Civil War will have hard time being brought to justice and peace. |
Primary source #3: fmln member Rigoberto Acosta de alas

Rigoberto was a civilian in El Salvador during the war, until he realized he had to join the army in order to keep his family safe and alive. He explained how anyone who walked outside of their homes was shot at and considered dead and he wanted to keep his children safe, therefore he left them for a while. Mr.Acosta De Alas says "... if my family stayed with me they would die, so I decided to die for them." I think that was the mentally for every father who went on and became a soldier, even though they weren't dying to keep their family alive they were still risking their lives everyday for the best of them.
